Registrations of Interest - Training Locations
The Kai Totika, Whakapakari Tinana Service provides six training courses over an eighteen-month period at various locations around the country and is requesting registrations of interest to hold training courses.
The location of training courses is determined by requests from local groups and the need for a regional spread to provide accessible training for Māori health workers across Aotearoa. Density of Māori populations and Māori health need is also taken into consideration when training locations are determined.
The following sets out the process for determing training locations:
- Te Hotu Manawa Māori set dates for training at least six months prior to start of an eighteen-month training period.
- These dates are sent out to networks for ‘registrations of interest’ to hold a training within a particular region.
- ‘Registrations of Interest’ received from a particular region are then asked to complete a ‘Formal Request’.
- The ‘Formal Request’ must include an outline of the following:
- Why we need this training (e.g. part of a regional workforce development plan, new kaimahi need upskilling in this area).
- Brief description of Māori health status (in relation to CVD, Diabetes and/or other Nutrition and Physical Activity related illness) in the region.
- Indication of the regional scope to effectively recruit Māori health advocates (ie can you get the numbers to attend!)
- Indication of a regional/local coordinator to liase with for further correspondence. (usually the person or organization requesting training).
5. On receipt of a formal request THMM will then advise whether the region is successful/unsuccessful.
6. THMM will then liase with a regional coordinator to set-up training delivery within the particular region.

Te Hotu Manawa Māori provides a training course in food, nutrition and physical activity, two to three times per year in different areas throughout the country. The course runs for a total of nine days, usually delivered in three, three-day blocks over a two - three month period.
Who is the course for?
This ‘train-the-trainer’ course has been designed for people working with Māori communities committed to promoting healthy lifestyle changes. They will use the knowledge and skills they gain to influence change within their whānau, hapū and iwi. The majority of past course participants have been Māori health workers who were able to incorporate nutrition and physical activity promotion into their work. You do not need an in-depth knowledge to start with. All you need is a willingness to learn.
What will I learn about?
A wide range of topics are covered. You will learn about the general principles of nutrition and physical activity and how they relate to our health. Also, changes in Māori eating and activity patterns from pre-European times to the present will be explored. We will also cover the special needs for different age groups as well as many other topics (see the course outline below).
