Public Health Bill (Tuesday, 15 April 2008)

The Health Select Committee is now hearing oral submissions on the Public Health Bill. The next hearings are on the 23 April in Wellington from 9am to 5.30pm and on the 30 April in Auckland from 9am to 8pm. No other hearing dates are scheduled.

About the bill
Most of the bill is devoted to traditional public health issues such as infectious diseases. But it contains a significant new feature. It allows for the making of regulations that reduce risk factors for conditions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Sub clause 374(x) will give future governments the power to make beneficial changes to reduce obesity, such as requiring restriction on the marketing of junk food to children, Subclause 374(r.) allows controls on the supply or sale of products likely to introduce or increase a risk to public health.
