Te Whare Tupuna, Te Whare Tangata, He iho ihi e! (Wednesday, 15 November 2006)

AUAHI KORE LAUNCHES “Smokefree Homes” Poster to describe the many perspectives to Te AO MĀORI, Te AO AUAHI KORE. It will stimulate korero at all levels.
It aligns to a Māori world view of the national tobacco campaign of “Smokefree Homes and Smokefree Cars”. We liken the woman as that “vehicle of the child”;
“Te Whare Tangata” the first home of man.
“Te Whare Tupuna” refers to the marae, the traditional home of Māori. We hope all marae will become Auahi Kore for the betterment of our future.
“He iho ihi e” relates to the sacredness of these taonga – the respect that they have within Māoridom.
The poster depicts “te ture tangata, te ture wairua” being the physical and spiritual realms. “Papatuanuku and Ranginui”, giving balance to life; the male and female elements depicted in our wahine and tane presence and the new generation; the symbolic male symbol “^” shown in Te Whare Tupuna and the female symbol “v” shown in Te Whare Tangata.
The Atua depicts our ancestral guidance of the giving of new life – “ngā taonga tuku iho” and the nurturing given in the first development of this life. “Kaitiakitanga” the protection is eminent and will provoke many discussions which we hope in turn will promote change!
It has been very rewarding personally working with so many talented people to bring this resource to life! Big ups to our ataahua models – TOA AUAHI KORE ROLE MODELS, Makuini Taikato, Ruia & Erina Aperahama, Maeghan Anahera Churches, Scottie & Stacey Morrison and Jamie-Lee Kingi. To our other hapu mama involved, my special aroha to Kylie Campbell, Stacey Savage and Tiffany, Paraone Tai Tin and Ahuwaiti, Toni McIntyre your images will be used in our marketing campaign.
