Māori Advocacy Plan (Monday, 12 February 2007)

In 2006 on behalf of the Obesity Action Coalition, THMM developed Māori specific advocacy strategies that are appropriate and effective in creating an environment and society where Māori whānau and communities are supported to attain and maintain a healthy body weight.
Some of you may have participated in the consultation rounds last year where your thoughts and expertise contributed to the strategies that can be found in the full Māori Strategic Advocacy Plan document. Since then THMM have joined forces with the OAC again to begin acting on the priorities you the stakeholders identified.
Over the next 6 months we will be researching and analysing data and information from here and abroad to develop a toolkit which can be used by organisations and communities willing to advocate for this cause in addressing the food security status of Māori living in Aotearoa.
This priority is about the right to access food in sufficient quantity and of good quality to maintain health. It includes the issues of accessibility and affordability of healthy kai, as well as low income and other socioeconomic factors.
We are aiming to complete this piece of work to coincide with the ANA National conference food security workshop in May.
