Rangatahi Wanted (Monday, 26 February 2007)

Rangatahi are sought after for a popular kids’ TV programme – What Now! please read more to respond.

Hi there,

Do you know a young 11-14 year old who’s family has suffered serious smoking-related illness? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

I am currently working with ‘What Now’, a popular Sunday morning kids’ TV show which has been running for 25 years, on a Smokefree programme. As part of a link with the Lungfish website, What Now will present a Smokefree show with specific messages targeted at the pre-teen audience, incorporated into the programme themes. The feature of the show is hopefully going to include the story of a real young person who’s family member has suffered serious illness due to their smoking. Lungfish will be promoted throughout the show and will feature in a joint competition. The show will screen on 25 March.

We’re looking for a young person who is confident and articulate to be involved in this show. For obvious reasons we’d prefer a young Maori female or male, however we’ll consider all options.

If you know of anyone who might be suitable, please let me know as soon as possible. As you will imagine, the message will be far more effective if communicated from a young person.

This partnership is expected to increase visitation to the Lungfish website, add credibility to the Lungfish and Smokefree brands, and increase the exposure of susceptible smokers to effective smokefree messages.

For your information:
Lungfish is an online tobacco control education resource for young people aged 7-12 years. It aims to educate and normalise smokefree attitudes and behaviours through interactivity and entertainment. In addition to information on smoking, content includes puzzles, games, comics ,quotes from ‘Smokefree Celebrities’, and a smokefree song. Lungfish also includes sections for teachers and another for parents. These provide information on the risk and protective factors of smoking uptake.

Cheers,

Heidi
