A valued mat cannot be woven from one strand - The tapestry of our sustenance and wellbeing cannot be woven by one strand alone.
In order to work towards goals and outcomes to create a healthier Aotearoa, individuals need to come together as one. The ideal foundation from which to launch wellbeing based initiatives are in environments where there are positive relationships and social harmony. Eating well and being active are fundamental to whānau and communities reaching their full potential for development and wellbeing. Strong whānau and communities can identify issues for themselves and be empowered to develop their own solutions. When relationships are strong within whānau and communities, there is a sense of responsibility to one another, giving health initiatives more persuasive powers.
The Health Sponsorship Council (HSC) is contracted to deliver four programmes that promote healthy lifestyles by providing information, motivation and skills that enable people to be non-smokers, eat healthily and live physically active lives, be safer in the sun, and avoid harmful gambling.
Te Hotu Manawa Māori (THMM) has made investments over the past two years in community led projects through the development and implementation of the National Hui Innovation Awards and would like to extend this investment further with the HSC’s community project fund.
HSC and THMM are looking to work together to provide funding for a Māori community project aimed at nutrition and increased physical activity. In addition to this, HSC and THMM will work to support the community to assist with the development of the project and its implementation.
The overall goal of HSC’s nutrition and physical activity work is:
New Zealanders attain and maintain a healthy weight through improved nutrition and increased physical activity
There are many existing projects targeting the area of nutrition and physical activity. HSC is looking to invest in a Māori led community project that is innovative and helps develop and deliver nutrition and physical activity related activities in Māori communities.
HSC and THMM would like to see the following outcomes from this community project:
- improved nutrition and physical activity within Māori communities
- ensure the identified communities have access to resources and information about nutrition and physical activity
- relationships are established and supported in order to improve nutrition and physical activity within that community
- increase awareness and understanding of Kaupapa Māori approaches to promoting nutrition and physical activity in Māori communities
- the project takes an approach that grows the field of Kaupapa Māori approaches to nutrition and physical activity in Māori communities i.e., includes consideration of Kaupapa Māori values and practices within the project planning and implementation
