Te Hotu Manawa Māori

Ko Wai Matou? Who Are We?

Te Hotu Manawa Māori is a national Māori organisation that was established in 1989 to improve Māori heart health. Originally set up under the umbrella of the National Heart Foundation, Te Hotu Manawa Māori delivered Auahi Kore (Smokefree), Kai o te Hauora (Nutrition) and Kirika Rumatiki (Rheumatic Fever) programmes. In 1997, Te Hotu Manawa Māori was registered as an Incorporated Society and thus became an independent national organisation, re-enforcing and re-emphasising its role as a national Māori provider of services dedicated to improving Māori heart health.

The services have since been extended to include the development of He Whakamarama mo te Tiaki Manawa o Aotearoa (Heart Guide) and providing two key training programmes to the Māori health workforce: Kai Totika me Whakapakari Tinana - Nutrition and Physical Activity and Tupeka Kore - Tobacco Control.

Established as a reputable national Māori organisation in both Māori communities and the public sector; Te Hotu Manawa Māori has been contracted by the Ministry of Health since 2002 to deliver the national training for Kaitotika Whakapakari Tinana – Nutrition & Physical Activity and since 2003, the national training for Aukati Kai Paipa – Smoking Cessation.Te Hotu Manawa Māori has coordinated and led national conferences for the Nutrition and Physical Activity workforce, and the Aukati Kai Paipa workforce. Te Hotu Manawa Māori also facilitated the National Tobacco Control Conference inaugural event, in 2008.

He aha ai? Why Te Hotu Manawa Māori?

Te Hotu Manawa Māori is a Charitable Trust with an inherent cultural foundation at all levels of the organisation. Te Hotu Manawa Māori is focused on the delivery of services to improve heart health for Māori and this differentiates the organisation from all other groups in the country.

Te Hotu Manawa Māori focuses on the delivery of “for Māori, by Māori” programmes – a unique and rare competency that gives the organisation a valuable edge in terms of its capacity, services and constituency.

Working with all Te Hotu Manawa Māori clients, staff use a range of tools, including information communication technology, to help the health and social services workforce in kaupapa Māori organisations to improve skills, and to increase knowledge and evidence based approaches in their practice.

The service programmes have been designed to return quantifiable outcomes based on results based accountabilities and to this end, Te Hotu Manawa Māori works with local and regional Māori health providers, and District Health Boards to align training with their needs. Te Hotu Manawa Māori maintains a large electronic network with a current client base of 3000 members.

Of great importance is our goal to improve the heart health of all Māori, and all New Zealanders.
