Te Hotu Manawa Māori
Ko Wai Matou? Who Are We?
Te Hotu Manawa Māori is a national Māori organisation that was established in 1989 to improve Māori heart health. Originally set up under the umbrella of the National Heart Foundation, Te Hotu Manawa Māori delivered Auahi Kore (Smokefree), Kai o te Hauora (Nutrition) and Kirika Rumatiki (Rheumatic Fever) programmes. In 1997, Te Hotu Manawa Māori was registered as an Incorporated Society and thus became an independent national organisation, re-enforcing and re-emphasising its role as a national Māori provider of services dedicated to improving Māori heart health.
The services have since been extended to include the development of He Whakamarama mo te Tiaki Manawa o Aotearoa (Heart Guide) and providing two key training programmes to the Māori health workforce: Kai Totika me Whakapakari Tinana - Nutrition and Physical Activity and Tupeka Kore - Tobacco Control.
Established as a reputable national Māori organisation in both Māori communities and the public sector; Te Hotu Manawa Māori has been contracted by the Ministry of Health since 2002 to deliver the national training for Kaitotika Whakapakari Tinana – Nutrition & Physical Activity and since 2003, the national training for Aukati Kai Paipa – Smoking Cessation.Te Hotu Manawa Māori has coordinated and led national conferences for the Nutrition and Physical Activity workforce, and the Aukati Kai Paipa workforce. Te Hotu Manawa Māori also facilitated the National Tobacco Control Conference inaugural event, in 2008.
